Craps History In ancient times the rolling of bones was used to foretell the will of the Gods. Some say this is where dice evolved from. There is also evidence that a similar game was played in the Holy Roman Empire when soldiers from the Roman legions shaved down pig knuckles into cubes and toss them into the inside of their shields as some form of entertainment. There are many takes on the history of craps, we will focus on 2 of them. Richard Epstein - Craps derive from a game from the Middle Ages known as Hazard. Which was brought to the US by English settlers. English Hazard became very popular in New Orleans in the early 1800's where the French called it craps. Mark Pilarski - Before the middle ages the Arabs played a game using little numbered cubes. They called these cubes Azzahr, which means "the die". The game then showed up across the Mediterranean in France where the French called it "Hasard". It ended up in England some time before the 1500's where it was spelled "Hazard". The roll of the lowest value was called "crabs". The French spelled the name "crabes" and in the early 1700's the game crossed the Atlantic to Acadia, which was a French colony. When the English took Acadia in 1755 the French speaking Acadians moved to Louisiana where they started speaking a language called French Louisiana. They took the game with them and called it "creps". By 1834 the word came into American English as " Craps ". In 1865 John H Winn, a dice maker created a new version of craps where a person could bet for or against the player. Game objective Craps is based on the number 7, as this number is the most frequent total made up by two dice. Craps (also known as Dice) is a game that consists of a round of rolls and the initial throw of the dice is called the come-out throw. The idea of Craps is to try to make as much money before a seven is rolled. The moment a seven is rolled the game ends and if you bet on a win you lost all your bets on the table. You also have the option to place a bet on a seven being rolled. Due to the complexity of the game it is better to read the game tutorial in the software you use to play Craps at. |
